Why Is It Beneficial To Opt For Fiber Optic Data Communications?

Fiber optic cables are commonly used by people in networks mainly to carry information for long distances. They have three main benefits over the conventional style copper cables that are still used in some industries. The benefits like no interference, less attenuation and high bandwidth makes the fiber optic technology more popular. Whether to choose the fiber optics as a mode for the data communications or not is identified by the system requirements. If the data rate and range is more then you need to know whether to choose the electrical cable or any fiber standards like Fibre Channel. When such things are not enough you have to consider a range of factors such as the cost, performance and others. But in certain situations the unique benefits and features of the fiber optics may provide the require solution to meet a challenge. There are many benefits in choosing the fiber optic solutions.

They are particularly used in some industries that also include automative, utilities, automation, petrochemical and others. When compare to other types of materials the metals that are used in the electrical cables are high in cost and their price is rising quickly. Due to this reason the fiber optic cables both the plastic and glass options are becoming attractive for many people. Even the bandwidth is a crucial factor for choosing the fiber for local cable TV services or local telecom service etc. When it is short range then the cost of electrical lines and devices is less but the cost can increase if you need to use additional circuitry for achieving fast Ethernet. The users assume that the fiber optic solutions are high in cost and cannot be a good option in terms of cost. For the high-end and single mode optic transceivers this assumption is true but not in other cases. More better alternatives can be selected when you want to reduce the cost on your investment. When compared to solutions that have factors like the installation cost these alternatives are not so expensive. To save money you have to look for compatible devices that work properly with your present system.

For instance to work properly with all the linksys equipments on the network you need to look for optical transceivers such as linksys mgbsx1, which is a compatible 1000BASE-SX SFP Transceiver for linksys devices. Depending on the cost, data rate, range and other things you can even look for other models in the linksys SFP transceivers. You can even find fiber optical transceivers of your choice in other popular brands like Cisco, Fiberstore and HP etc. The high quality performance of the fiber optic cables when compared to the copper cables makes them a popular choice. Low attenuation of the fiber optic solutions offers high range performance. Usually you needn't have to spend much power to make a laser diode work that is capable in transmitting light signal to specific distances.

The Gigabit Ethernet transceivers provide a range of 10km using power of only 660mW. When compared to electrical cables the power consumption of these transceivers is less. This is one more benefit in choosing fiber optic over copper. Fiber optic cable are thinner in size when compared to the copper wires. For upgrading your infrastructure you can easily use the fiber as it can fit in small or crowded  spaces than the copper cable. In existing structure you can easily install the fiber optic cables which is due to the physically small size of these cables.

Another benefit is that when the range of fiber optics is longer then installation of the repeaters can be avoided or at least minimized and this allows them to be placed conveniently. The copper wires are thick and rigid that makes them difficult to install and they requires more space which is probably challenging for some people. The fiber optical cables are light in weight when compare to the copper wire cables so the installation as well as transportation is easy. They even save cost especially for the large projects due to these benefits. Noise immunity is another benefit in using the fiber optic cables. From various sources the interference is possible in a communication network. However the fiber optic cables have noise immunity and it means these cables can be installed in places where interference occur from different sources.

  1. Nice information on fiber optic application. Next week I have a project on an optical fiber, so I am so interested to collect more information on this. Last night I got one blog on the Basic need of cable assembly & its uses & now you. Really both blogs are very interesting & very informative. Thanks for this through which I am getting more information for my project.
